Ariki vs. Narai mk4
Nov 26th, 2006, 7:30pm

Yes I am considering building either an Ariki or a Narai MkIV and so far am leaning heavily towards the Narai as I gather the Ariki has very little accomodation space. Does anybody have any pictures/layouts for either, especially the Ariki as i am need of some guidance on basing my decision. Some advice would be useful too.

There are some pictures in the PCA gallery of an Ariki (ignore the Tiki 28 pictures inadvertently mixed in with them).

hi patrick i went thru the same line of thought many moons ago and after lots of thought decided on an ariki my reasons being having looked at a narai mk 4 on the hard i could see the hull shapes creating a wave between the hulls which could create drag altho james has since that time lengthend main beems slightly so probley solves problem of wave between hulls anyway i also looked a taking my ariki hulls out to 7 foot beam but this does not really give any more usable room . the narai mk4 gains it buy having raised sections between the beams allowing the berths to be higher there for wider  ariki berths are still a good size and im going to build a small deck pod so the missus can keep her double mattress and also allow a bit of shelter if needed while under way .araki also has longer waterline length for that smoother ride my araki is a mk2 and altho not in the water yet you can see she is going to be one fast comfortable boat she will be ketch rig so wont be to hard to handle! hope this helps cheers deano

How interesting.  I have a Narai MKIV that has been lengthened 3 feet and is close to Ariki size.  I doubt that there is much diffeence in hull drag except that the Narai is probably heavier built and that would make a great deal of difference.  My rig is like the Ariki with a cutter and about 1200 sq ft of sail, it moves out pretty well.
